Responding to IRS letters in a timely manner.
Why you should respond to certain IRS letters and why deadlines are important.
Each letter you receive from the IRS will have a date of when you need to respond to the letter. If you don’t you could be waiving or impacting your taxpayer rights. This can include appeal rights, claim to a refund or a right to petition the tax court.
A common letter taxpayers may receive is the CP 2000 notice. Usually a taxpayer will receive this letter if the IRS system flags the return for a discrepancy. When you get a letter like this in the mail you need to either agree to the changes or not.
If you don’t respond to the letter at all then the IRS assumes the changes they discovered are correct. However, that may not always be the case. This is one example as to why you need to open any IRS letters you receive and to respond timely to them.
The taxpayer bill of rights covers topics which every taxpayer should know if you owe back federal taxes. Below are the links to each section of the taxpayer bill of rights.
